Starting again

I am a 46 year old woman who has been obese for over 25 years.  I have recently gotten married for the second time and my new husband is 13 years younger then me.

We have both recently realized that if we are going to have a healthy happy and productive future together we  both have to lose a significant amount of weight.  My biggest problem is lack of motivation to exercise.  We have managed to get the food consumption under control with portion control and controlling what we allow in the house (which isn’t much these days) .  Exercise is not a problem for my husband as he recently took a job where he is physically active for 9 hrs a day.  I work in an office.

I am hoping to learn how others stay motivated.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreicated .

Thanks

I know this is proabably not what you want to hear but - you just have to do it. Make exercise a priority. Once you get moving you will feel better and if you skip a day that you are supposed to exercise you will feel guilty and will not want to skip. I have recently made exercise a habit. It is just not an option for me to not exercise. I do it in the morning. Otherwise, I’ll contemplate it all day and be miserable and usually end up skipping it. Just commit to something you like doing and do it regularly. It is a challenge and hard work but it is essential to losing weight and getting healthy. Get moving! You can do it.

I hate to exercise, probably because it’s hard when you’re out of shape. I go to a water aerobics class 3 mornings a week and have been going for more than 2 years. It’s the greatest way to exercise as far as I’m concerned. On the days I don’t go to the pool I walk….hate it, but do it anyway. I only walk 1 1/2 miles, but at least I’m moving.

welcome! I know what you mean about exercise. I have always been a sedentary, bookworm type person but I realised that unless I got moving I was kidding myself about losing weight. I just have that plump, motherly stubborn shape and I have accepted exercise is part of the deal.

I started with 15 minutes on the treadmill about 2 & 1/2 months ago. Now I do 60-90 minutes a day and it is making a difference. So start really small if you have to, and just go up by 5-10 minutes a week. The other thing I’d suggest is to join one of the challenge teams here when there is a place, that has helped me heaps! Go Hot Rods!!
good luck and just keep plugging away at it :)

    Hi,

Thank you for your advice to me. It is very good! I get up at 5:00 too. I do a powerwalk for 2 miles in my living room. It is so hard to get started. But I know mentally that once I get up, my heart rate starts increasing, there is no more dread or tired feeling. The body truly overcomes the mind at that point.

I am 39 with alot to lose. I know how you feel. If you like, we can encourage each other. Today I want to set a true plan with food and workout. I real program that I KNOW will work for me. Lord knows I know as much as a person can do.

Just be encouraged. 20 mins is great! Remember that the worst part is getting started!

    Michelle
